National Assembly Deputy Speaker and European Integration Committee Chairperson Elvira Kovacs met, in the National Assembly, with the delegation of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of the European Parliament (AFET).
Deputy Speaker Kovacs, as a great advocate of Serbia's European integration, first emphasised the importance of dialogue and expressed hope that cooperation between the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and the European Parliament would continue and improve in the coming period.
She informed the guests that the National Assembly has established a practice of discussing the European Commission's reports on Serbia, both at the European Integration Committee and at the plenary session of the National Assembly.
She said that it is important to establish dialogue in a polarised society, noting that the greatest responsibility lies with the ruling majority, but that the will and participation of other parties is also needed. She expressed concern that the failure to open new clusters in the last four years has resulted in a significant decline in citizens' support, motivation and commitment to Serbia's European path.
Speaking about the implementation of reforms that would enable the opening of Cluster 3, which concern media freedom, the constitution of the REM Council and the implementation of ODIHR recommendations, Kovacs pointed out that the National Assembly has made a major step forward by setting up the Working Group for Coordination and Monitoring of the Implementation of ODIHR Recommendations for Improving the Electoral Process. Currently, the plenary session agenda includes the adoption of the List of Candidates for members and deputy members of the Commission for Audit, Verification and Control of the Accuracy and Updating of the Voter Register in accordance with ODIHR recommendations. The plan is to continue working on improving electoral conditions, i.e. to adopt more laws related to the electoral process and the fight against corruption.
Kovacs informed the AFET members about the procedure for electing the REM Council, the problems that arose during the election process, as well as that work on the formation of the REM Council has continued. She stressed that the procedure needed to be carried out in a transparent manner with the participation of all relevant actors, for which we also needed the support of the European Parliament. She underlined that the ruling majority offers an opportunity for open dialogue.
She briefed the guests about the National Assembly’s work and the proposed judiciary laws currently on its agenda.
She expressed her belief that the new European Parliament Resolution on Serbia will be much more objective and realistic and that Serbia's European path needs to be discussed, instead of information being obtained exclusively from the media and certain political groups’ channels.
She concluded the conversation by saying that Serbia remains on the path of European integration, and once again expressed hope that cooperation between the National Assembly and the European Parliament will be strengthened.
