Today, at the National Assembly House, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic received the Ambassador of the United Kingdom to Serbia H.E. Michael Davenport.

Davenport stressed that the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia has always played a key role in Serbia which was particularly prominent this year as Serbia’s approach to the European Union gathers speed and the Serbian deputies tackle the difficult job of fulfilling the EU candidate status requisites. “The United Kingdom supports all of Serbia’s efforts on the road toward full EU membership and we urge that Serbia gains candidacy status as soon as possible, but most of the work rests with Serbia itself”, said the British Ambassador.

The NARS Speaker thanked the UK Ambassador for the ratification of the SAA by both the British Parliament Houses. Djukic-Dejanovic informed the Ambassador on the National Assembly’s duties and that the Task Group drafting the amendments to the Law on the Election of Deputies met today and expressed her expectation that this, as well as other laws from the so-called European agenda, would enter regular assembly procedure by 15 May. “Passing all the laws aimed at harmonising Serbian and European legislation and their application will, primarily, improve the lives of our citizens which is an often overlooked fact. These laws are our laws”, said the Speaker. Davenport said that he is aware that it is difficult to apply all the European standards completely, but Serbia should come up with its own solutions in compliance with these standards.
