Today, at the National Assembly House, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic-Dejanovic received EC Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighborhood Policy Stefan Füle.

Djukic-Dejanovic informed Füle that the NARS had amended its Rules of Procedure so as not to impinge on the independence of regulatory bodies. Talking about the abolition of blank resignations, another important suggestion by the EC regarding the Assembly’s operation, the Speaker informed the European Commissioner on the creation of a Task Group which forwarded a proposal of the amendment to the Law on the Election of Deputies to the Venetian Commission and was awaiting its opinion.

Encouraging Serbia on its road to full EU membership, Füle emphasised the importance of the National Assembly in Serbia’s overall European integration process saying that he appreciated the NARS Speaker’s efforts on coordinating the process, considering the diversity of the parliamentary groups in the supreme legislative body.

“The adoption of the laws envisaged by the Action Plan is very important, but the implementation of these laws and the essential debate on their proposals at the NARS are far more important”, said the European Commissioner. He added that he appreciated the National Assembly’s relationship with the EU Delegation to Serbia and the Venetian Commission whose recommendations must be taken into consideration, and the NARS Speaker said that the recommendations would be met, that is a promise to both the citizens of Serbia and the EU.

The officials agreed that submitting Bills under urgent procedure is undesirable. The NARS Speaker said that the National Assembly and the Government are in very close cooperation on the implementation of the urgent procedure striving to use it only in extraordinary cases.
