Members of PFG with France Meet with Member of French National Assembly

The members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with France met today, at the National Assembly House, with Pierre-Yves Le Borgn, member of the French National Assembly.

The meeting revolved around the migrant crisis, Serbia’s European integration and how to improve cooperation between the two countries.

Greeting the French MP, the Head of the PFG with France Natasa Vuckovic opined that Serbia and France have quite a well-developed interparliamentary cooperation, as well as cooperation in other fields, yet there is still room for improvement. Vuckovic highlighted the importance of boosting cooperation in the areas of economy, investment, culture, education and science and said the tradition of learning the French language in Serbia is a custom worth preserving. The Head of the PFG with France thanked France for its assistance during last year’s floods in Serbia. She informed the member of the French National Assembly that Serbia is committed to European integration and eagerly awaits the opening of the first negotiation chapters.

French MP Pierre-Yves Le Borgn said that one of the objectives of his visit to Serbia is to promote cooperation between the two countries. He said that during his two-day visit he attended the Armistice Day ceremony commemorating the end of WWI during which Serbia and France were allies. He said that on the occasion he laid a wreath at the French Military Cemetery in Belgrade to commemorate the fallen soldiers and help keep the memory of all the victims alive.

The officials also spoke about the European Commission’s Annual Progress Report on Serbia underlining the importance of accepting the technical standards and values of the European Union in the negotiation process.

Speaking of the migrant crisis, PFG Head Vuckovic opined that Serbia’s response to it was adequate, demonstrating that the Western Balkans is part of the European Union and that the crisis must be addressed jointly.

The Head of the PFG with France said that Serbia is pleased by the fact that Pristina’s UNESCO bid was denied because of the very real concern about the monasteries and cultural and historical monuments on the territory of Kosovo-Metohija. She said that Serbia strives to build mutual trust with Pristina so that the monuments and monasteries would be protected. Mentioning the establishment of the Community of Serb municipalities, Vuckovic stressed that both Belgrade and Pristina are obliged to abide by the agreements they achieved.

The officials also discussed the establishment of a Regional Youth Council modelled after the French and German parliaments’ practice aimed at strengthening young people’s capacities, learning about different cultures, languages and promoting educational cooperation.

The meeting was also attended by Branka Bosnjak and Milena Bicanin, members of the PFG with France.
