Members of PFG with Cyprus Meets with Cypriot Ambassador to Serbia

The members of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Cyprus, led by PFG Head Biljana Pantic Pilja met today at the National Assembly with the Ambassador of Cyprus to the Republic Serbia Andreas Photiou.

Biljana Pantic Pilja stressed that Serbia and Cyprus enjoy an excellent bilateral cooperation at all levels and thanked the country for respecting international law and supporting Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty as regards the status of Kosovo-Metohija. She opined that the two countries’ cooperation and mutual support in international organisations is also very significant.

Pantic Pilja was especially grateful for Cyprus’ continuous support of Serbia’s European path, stressing that the country’s experience of European integration could be of exceptional importance for Serbia.

Ambassador Andreas Photiou agreed that our two countries are characterised by a long-standing friendship, grounded in the same values and mutual support in difficult times. He said that Cyprus has a clear position and does not recognise the unilaterally declared independence of the so-called state of Kosovo, adding that the difficult position of the Serbian population on the territory is a cause of concern.

At the same time, he thanked Serbia for respecting international law and UN charters and for supporting the territorial integrity of Cyprus as regards its dispute with Turkey.

The officials agreed that in addition to the good relations at the political level, Serbia and Cyprus have well developed relations in the fields of agriculture, tourism and education, and pointed to the potential to deepen cooperation in the fields of culture, energy, trade, green technologies and renewable resources.

The meeting was attended by PFG members Nikola Bokan, Milan Radin, Stanislava Janosevic and Aleksandar Mirkovic, who noted that the two countries and peoples share similar experiences in terms of threatened territorial integrity and sovereignty, and expressed satisfaction at their mutual principled support in the protection of international law.
