MP Zoran Babic Speaks at Second International Scientific Conference on Human Security

Defence and Internal Affairs Committee member MP Zoran Babic addressed the Second International Scientific Conference on Human Security: Twenty Years of Human Security, held on 7 and 8 November 2014 at the National Assembly.

Addressing the participants of the Conference, Zoran Babic stressed that the National Assembly, and the relevant Defence and Internal Affairs Committee and Security Services Control Committee in particular, are guided by the principles outlined in the human security concept. Integral approach to security, where democratic control of the political system is the cornerstone of the security of citizens and state, does not belie the classical institutional security system, said Babic, stressing that the MPs as representatives of the citizens are obliged to create the institutional environment that ensures the security of the citizens and respect of human rights.

The Chief of the UN Human Security Unit Mehrnaz Mostafavi, Head of OSCE Mission to Serbia Peter Burkhard, Japanese Ambassador to Serbia Masafumi Kuroki, UNDP Deputy Representative Steliana Nedera, Head of Operations Sector I of the Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Serbia Yolanda San Jose, Foreign Ministry representative Zoran Kovacevic and the Dean of the Faculty of Security Studies of the University of Belgrade Radomir Milasinovic, also spoke at the opening ceremony.

The Second International Scientific Conference on Human Security: Twenty years of Human Security gathers scholars and practitioners from human security area, with the goal of re-examining the 20-year period of human security concept, with special focus on new theoretical discourses and dominant practices in their implementation.

The conference was organised by the Human Security Research Centre of the University of Belgrade and the Development Initiative Group (SeConS), member of the Network for peace, reconciliation and human security funded by the European Union.
