Head of the Standing Delegation of the National Assembly to the Council of Europe Parliamentary Assembly, Milos Aligrudic, met today at the National Assembly House with the delegation of the Council of Europe Committee of Ministers visiting Serbia in the capacity of a Monitoring Mission supervising the fulfillment of obligations that Serbia assumed by joining the Council of Europe.

Members of the Monitoring Mission, headed by Claudia Luciani, head of the South East Europe Division of the Council of Europe Directorate General of Political Affairs and Cooperation, were interested the most in the judiciary reform in Serbia. Aligrudic said that now is the time to bring the reform which started in 2004 to a successful completion.

He is convinced that the position of courts can be improved by observing the principle of permanence of courts and through the election of judges where, he believes, the role of parliament should be decreased. When talking about the relation of the state and the judiciary system, he stresses that all suspicion of pressure from the Government on court rulings must be eliminated and that court rulings must be respected.

Claudia Luciani supported Serbia’s efforts in conducting the judiciary reform and pointed out that the CE Committee of Ministers may offer appropriate help to have it successfully completed.
