Lao PDR Parliamentary Delegation Visits Republic of Serbia

The state visit of the Lao PDR Parliament Speaker is Serbia’s regular foreign policy activity organised at the initiative of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Serbia.

We would like to note that it followed Foreign Minister Ivan Mrkic’s visit to Indochina and the visit of the Lao PDR Foreign Minister and First Deputy Prime Minister to Belgrade. The RS National Assembly Speaker received the Lao PDR parliamentary delegation, headed by the Parliament Speaker, Pany Yathotou, within his capacity and duty as Speaker.
The Lao PDR delegation was very interested in strengthening economic cooperation, with a special focus on infrastructure and energy projects, in view of which it also met with the highest government dignitaries at the ministries, so that they could directly discuss the potentials for Serbia companies to take part in developmental projects in Laos, first and foremost in the construction of a large number of hydroelectric power plants, which is why the Lao PDR delegation also visited Djerdap I hydroelectric power plant.
The Lao PDR delegation also met with the head of Serbian diplomacy, Ivan Mrkic and Prime Minister Ivica Dacic. In the meeting with National Assembly Speaker the Lao PDR delegation promised to support Serbia’s joining ASEAN and its aspiration to join the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia. Last but not least, it should be noted that Laos did not recognise the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo and, in the meeting with the National Assembly Speaker, the delegation confirmed Laos’ clear position and commitment to continue to pursue that policy.
