Today, at the National Assembly House, the Chairman of the Committee on Interethnic Relations Miletic Mihajlovic received the Culture, Media and Religion Attaché of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Serbia, Hamid Reza Ahmadi.

The Iranian Attaché briefed his host on the status and protection of ethnic and religious communities in Iran, stressing that the country believes ethnic minorities very important as they, as he said, enrich the Iranian culture.

The Chairman of the Committee on Interethnic Relations informed his guest that Serbia boasts 20 ethnic minorities whose rights are guaranteed under the Serbian Constitution and whose status is regulated by the Law on Protection of Rights and Freedoms of National Minorities, in line with the international treaties and conventions that Serbia has signed. Ethnic minorities are represented at the National Assembly by their own parliamentary group and they also have their legitimately elected representative bodies - national councils.

Oleana Papuga, member of the National Assembly’s Committee on Interethnic Relations, took part in the meeting and spoke of the realisation of minority rights in Vojvodina.

The conversation also touched on the development of interparliamentary cooperation between the two friendly countries, particularly on the level of working bodies dealing with the protection of the freedoms and rights of ethnic minorities.
