IAO Decisions on Improvement of Operation of its Committees

The Greek island of Chios hosted the meeting of the International Secretariat, chairs and rapporteurs of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy (IAO), 3-6 May, which was attended by Aleksandar Cotric, member of the Serbian National Assembly and Head of the standing delegation to IAO.

At the meeting, chaired by the President of the General Assembly Sergei Popov, IAO passed decisions on the improvement of operation of the organization’s committees and adopted the information on the appointment of an Egyptian parliamentary delegation to take part in IAO. At the proposal of IAO Secretary General Andreas Michailidis the attending considered the organization’s relations with the Pan-African Parliament and the delegation of the European Parliament at the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly.

At the International Secretariat meeting the participants were presented the photo-monograph entitled “Destruction of Monuments of Eastern Christianity” and decided to announce a contest with the topic “Resurrection of Christ”.

As rapporteur of the IAO Committee on Culture, Aleksandar Cotric emphasized how important the photo-monograph is for raising public awareness as it contains photos of destroyed orthodox churches and monasteries, among them the Serbian Orthodox temples destroyed and burned during WW2 on the territory of the Independent State of Croatia, in Croatia from 1991 to 1995, as well as in Kosovo-Metohija 1999 to date.

The participants decided that the next, 24th IAO General Assembly is to be held in Rome in late June.

The IAO Secretariat meeting on Chios was attended by MPs from Russia, Greece, Serbia, Romania, Georgia, Jordan, Cyprus, Egypt and Lebanon.
