Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Committee Chairman Meets with Kikinda and Zitiste Ombudsmen
The Chairman of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality Aleksandar Markovic met today with the Ombudsman of the City of Kikinda Dragisa Mihajlovic and the Local Ombudsman of the Municipality of Zitiste Aleksa Kuzman.
At the meeting, which is one of a series of meetings with local ombudsmen, the officials exchanged information and experiences concerning human rights in local self-government units (LSGs). They agreed that the institution of ombudsmen at the local level is of great importance for citizens of smaller LGUs in whose offices the citizens can receive legal support. They also drew attention to the fact that not all LGUs have local ombudsmen, and often in smaller communities that have them, they work without administrative and technical support. They went on to highlight as a special feature of the work of local ombudsmen, especially on the territory of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina, the work on the protection and promotion of the rights of national minorities.
The officials discussed the range of services provided by local ombudsmen to citizens. Special attention was paid to models of cooperation between LGUs that have and LGUs that do not have local ombudsmen. They opined that there is a desire to improve the legislative framework that would regulate the election of local ombudsmen more precisely.
Local Ombudsmen Mihajlovic and Kuzman informed the Chairman of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality about the activities of the Association of Local Ombudsmen, which aims to support the training and exchange of experiences of local ombudsmen, their greater recognition in the public, and the acquisition of international practice.
They also discussed the possibilities of further mutual cooperation.
