Hong Kong Local Assembly Deputies Visit National Assembly

The chairpersons of the Foreign Affairs Committee and the Committee on the Economy, Regional Development, Trade, Tourism and Energy, Aleksandra Djurovic and Aleksandra Tomic respectively, received today, at the National Assembly, the deputies of the local assembly of Hong Kong Li Decheng and Chen Young who is also a representatives of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress of PR China.


The officials opined that the political and bilateral relations between Serbia and China are at a very high level, possibly the highest in history, and that the two countries support one another’s territorial integrity.

The Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee Aleksandra Djurovic thanked China for its support of Serbia’s efforts to preserve Kosovo-Metohija, and of its progress toward Europe. She added that Chinese investments are viewed as a support to the entire region, aimed at reducing the gap between it and developed European economies. She informed the guests that the National Assembly’s Parliamentary Friendship Group with China has 55 members and that this year marks the 55th anniversary of bilateral relations between the two countries. China’s support to the realisation of project Morava channel is very important she said, and she is sure China will find interest for more investments into Serbia and continue to develop and promote cultural and educational cooperation and realise the two countries’ agreement to open cultural centres. She also announced that the PFG with China will soon be visiting the Chinese parliament, and the Chinese Foreign Affairs Committee will be visiting Serbia.

The Chairperson of the Committee on the Economy, Regional Development, Trade, Tourism and Energy Aleksandra Tomic informed the Chinese delegation about the authority and duties of the Committee she chairs and underlined the importance of project Morava channel for the Serbian economy, infrastructure and tourism. She informed the representatives of the Hong Kong assembly that the Committee had organised a public hearing on the project in order to inform the public about its significance. She added that the National Assembly would soon be setting up an informal parliamentary group which should serve as a forum for Serbia’s energy policy, and stressed the importance of Serbia’s cooperation with China in the field of new technologies.

The deputies of the local assembly of Hong Kong Li Decheng and Chen Young said that the objective of their visit to Serbia is to boost cooperation on economic projects in Serbia. The two most important projects are Morava channel and the development of agricultural cooperation which means livestock breeding and the export of meat to the Chinese market. They asked for support of the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the National Assembly for the realisation of these projects aimed at economic and trade cooperation, as well as development of infrastructure, agriculture and tourism. They invited National Assembly representatives to visit Chinese corporations and learn about their power and investment potential. They hope that Serbia would consider opening a representative office in Hong Kong in order to boost trade and economic cooperation. They also gave a brief overview of Hong Kong’s economic potential and highlighted the importance of cultural and sporting cooperation.
