Gojkovic with Kenyan Senate Speaker

On the eve of the 141st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, hosted by the National Assembly on 13 – 17 October, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic met today with the Speaker of the Kenyan Senate Kenneth Lusaka.

Gojkovic thanked Kenya for taking part in the 141st IPU Assembly, stressing that Serbia is fully dedicated to the IPU in light of its crucial importance in global parliamentary diplomacy.

Gojkovic and Lusaka agreed that the IPU Assembly is an excellent opportunity to strengthen the good and friendly relations between Serbia and Kenya, opining that the Serbian Assembly Speaker’s visit to Kenya in February of this year, after a decades-long pause, gave a strong impulse to the development of parliamentary and overall relations between the two countries. They praised the Memorandum of Cooperation signed during the Serbian Assembly Speaker’s visit to Kenya as a cornerstone of the strengthening parliamentary ties.

Gojkovic thanked Kenya for its principled position on Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty and international law, noting that strengthening international law is the overreaching theme of the 141st IPU Assembly. Gojkovic thanked Kenya for never voting against Serbia’s interests in international forums during so-called Kosovo’s attempts to join international organizations, which is contrary to UNSC Resolution 1244 and hinders dialogue, hoping that Kenya would continue to support Serbia.

Speaking of the unilaterally declared independence of Kosovo-Metohija, Lusaka stressed that Kenya abides by international law and stands firmly by it, adding that no international organization should break international law.

Stating that the relations between Serbia and Kenya are following an upward trend, Lusaka went on to say that Kenya is working on opening an Embassy in Belgrade. He added that advancing cooperation in the fields of economy, agriculture and trade merits special attention.

Gojkovic and Lusaka opined that the coming visit of the Speaker of the National Assembly of Kenya Justin Muturi to Serbia would further promote the parliamentary cooperation between the two countries.

The 141st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the oldest and biggest international parliamentary organization, to be launched on 13 October in Belgrade Sava Centre, will be attended by the parliamentary delegations from 150 countries, among them 80 parliament speakers, 60 deputy speakers and more than 2000 parliamentarians and delegates.
