Gojkovic at Oplenac on Statehood Day

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic laid a wreath on the sarcophagus of Karadjordje in the church of St. George on Oplenac, as part of the state ceremony on the national holiday of Serbia’s Statehood Day.

Besides the National Assembly Speaker, wreaths were also laid by the Minister of Labour, Employment, Veteran and Social Affairs Aleksandar Vulin, Minister of Defence Zoran Djordjevic, a delegation of the Serbian Armed Forces, Minister of Labour, War Veterans and Disabled Persons’ Protection in the Government of the Republic of Srpska Milenko Savovic and the top dignitaries of the diplomatic corps in the Republic of Serbia.

Congratulating Statehood Day to the citizens of Serbia Gojkovic said that Sretenje (Candlemas) is one of the most important dates in the country’s more recent history, the day when the strenuous path to liberty began with the First Serbian Uprising, and the day Serbia passed the Sretenje Constitution – Serbia’s first democratic constitution and one of the most modern ones in Europe at the time.

The National Assembly Speaker said that Oplenac is the right place to speak of the decisiveness and resilience of the Serbian people to fight for freedom and build a modern state, and that Sretenje unites the strife for national and civil liberation.

Gojkovic also said that the fight for freedom and the fight for democracy are inseparable, evidenced in the fact that both the First and the Second Serbian Uprising had been launched by the people’s will and decisions, in assemblies, and that the cornerstone of parliamentary life was forged in the most difficult times of struggle.

“Today, Serbia remembers the leaders of the uprising, Karadjordje, Milos Obrenovic and others whose heroism, bravery and wisdom wrote the pages of our glorious history, and cannot forget those whose ideas and enlightenment left an indelible mark”, said Gojkovic, adding that one of them is Dimitrije Davidovic, maker of the Sretenje Constitution.

Gojkovic said that still, more than two centuries from the beginning of the fight for a modern state, due to crisis and tensions in the modern world, we face challenges which require new efforts to strengthen our state and stressed that Serbia strives to find the best way for itself and its citizens to ensure economic development and a more ordered state.

The Parliament Speaker said that only a stable, hard-working and strong Serbia can defend its national interests and emphasized that no task than is more important than fighting for a more successful and modern Serbia, globally respected and esteemed.
