Gojkovic and Bundestag President

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic met today with the President of the German Bundestag Norbert Lammert, currently in a two-day visit to Serbia.

Gojkovic emphasized the importance of the visit since it is the first visit by the Bundestag President to the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, saying she was sure today's talks would contribute to the development of relations between the two countries characterized by extensive overall cooperation, following a constant upward trend. In that context, she mainly focused on the development of cooperation between the two parliaments and their members, as representatives of the citizens.

Gojkovic thanked Germany for the support of Serbia's Euro-integration process stressing the importance of opening new chapters, which not only supports the reforms and Serbia's strategic commitment to EU accession, but also sends an encouraging message to the region. She said that Serbia would continue with the reform processes and is aware that the road ahead is by no means easy.

The National Assembly Speaker stressed that Serbia remains a reliable and steady partner to Germany and the EU in the maintenance of regional cooperation and stability, reminding the guest of the National Assembly's extensive contributions to regional cooperation.

Gojkovic said that the election results in Kosovo-Metohija present a challenge to the talks with Pristina, to which the Serbian side is fully committed and which require the implementation of the agreements achieved, the establishment of the Community of Serb Municipalities being one of the priorities.

Bundestag President Norbert Lammert said that today's meeting is a good opportunity to confirm Germany's support for Serbia's path to Europe and to convey readiness to invest joint efforts into the essential reforms Serbia has launched into. He especially stressed the need to continue the implementation of criteria in the domain of rule of law, independent judiciary and anti-corruption. The parliament plays a key role in the reforms. In that context, he said that a country trying to join the EU, through the integration process, meets the standards and requirements necessary to achieve full EU membership, with all the inherent rights and obligations.

Lammert then reminded the host of the Bundestag's role in the Euro-integration process, underlining Germany's interest in the continued intensification of reform processes in Serbia, which the German side would continue to support.
