Gojkovic stressed that the relations between Serbia and Greece are good and friendly, thanking Meimarakis for Greece and its parliament’s support of Serbia’s European integration.

The National Assembly Speaker said that Serbia is fully committed to Euro-integration and aims to complete all the reform necessary to become a member of the European Union by the end of 2018, and then it would be up to the EU to decide about Serbia’s membership.

Gojkovic said that, besides wanting to become part of the EU, Serbia is conducting reforms first and foremost because of its citizens, to become economically stable which is in fact the goal of the Government’s reforms.

Meimarakis highlighted the importance of the parliament’s role in the reform process because it is up to the MPs to explain to the citizens that the decisions they make are in their interest.

Speaking of European integration, Meimarakis said that integration of the region would have a positive impact on stability, adding that it was the politicians’ duty to help make sure the new generations in the Balkans live in peace.

Meimarakis is visiting Serbia as part of the final event of the Serbia-Greece parliamentary Twinning project aimed at boosting the Serbian Assembly’s transparency, functioning and improving internal procedures on the country’s road to the EU.
