Gojkovic Opens Women’s Parliamentary Network Seminar

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic opened a seminar organised by the Women’s Parliamentary Network with the support of the OSCE Mission and UNDP in Serbia, and asked all the current legislature’s women MPs to join the Network and work together to improve the position of women in Serbia.

Gojkovic said that the National Assembly has recognised the need to strengthen gender equality through the efforts of the Women’s Parliamentary Network which has in its three years of existence worked toward fostering stronger ties between women, intensifying cooperation with local self-governments, economic empowerment of women and combating violence.

She reminded the participants that the National Assembly has passed many laws protecting the rights of women and will continue actively improve the legislative framework, especially that relating to combating violence against women.

Gojkovic said that Serbia is determined to systematically combat violence against women by passing new regulations and measures, among them primarily a new law on the prevention of domestic violence, by which it wishes to underline the message that the state will not tolerate violence against women.

“By passing this law and amending the Criminal Code to include new criminal acts and stricter punishment, as well as through other planned measures, Serbia will build a comprehensive system of combating violence against women. Here I, of course, expect the full support of the Women’s Parliamentary Network”, said Gojkovic.
