Gojkovic Meets with Iranian Vice-President and Foreign Minister

On the second day of her official visit to Iran, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic had separate meetings with Iranian Vice President Eshaq Jahangiri and Foreign Minister Javad Zarif.


The officials opined that the relations between the two countries, established 70 years ago, are good, and Vice President Jahangiri said he hoped for an improvement in the countries’ bilateral cooperation.

Jahangiri said that evaluating the two countries’ capacities is very important for the development of relations, especially after the signing of the Iranian Nuclear Programme Agreement which has created the conditions conducive to the development of relations especially with friendly countries.

He also underlined the importance of developing bilateral cooperation in view of Serbia’s role in the Balkans and Iran’s in its region.

Speaking about terrorism, the Iranian Vice President said that the fight against it calls for a global and principled approach.

Gojkovic thanked the Vice President for his assessment of Serbia’s role in the region, stressing that Serbia pursues a policy of stability and has good relations with all the countries in the region.

The National Assembly Speaker agreed that terrorism is a global problem and outlined Serbia’s activities in that context. Gojkovic also informed her hosts about the situation and activities concerning migration and restated that she expected a multilateral response to the cause of the crisis.

Iranian Foreign Minister Javad Zarif also opined that the relations between Iran and Serbia are traditionally good, since the times of former Yugoslavia, and that the present is an excellent time to further their development at the bilateral and multilateral level.

The officials commended the excellent interparliamentary cooperation sure that the Serbian Assembly Speaker’s visit would contribute to the improvement of overall relations. They also said they hoped that the coming meeting of the Mixed Commission would create the atmosphere conducive to the further development of relations.

Yesterday, Gojkovic began her two-day visit by meeting with the Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Iran Ali Larijani, at whose invitation she had come to visit Iran, and also met with the co-chairman of the Iranian Government’s Mixed Trade Commission and Minister of Trade, Mining and Industry Nematzadeh.

MP Dragomir Karic, member of the PFG with Iran, was also part of the National Assembly’s delegation.
