Gojkovic: Serbia Committed to Advancing Friendly Relations and Cooperation with Eurasian Countries

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic, taking part in the 4th meeting of Speakers of Eurasian Countries’ Parliaments in Kazakhstan, stressed that Serbia is firmly committed to advancing friendly relations and cooperation with all the countries of the Eurasian region.

“The meeting of the heads of parliament of our two continents, a region with the biggest potentials on the planet in a variety of fields, is an excellent opportunity to develop cooperation and a big responsibility because the messages we send here goes out to two thirds of humanity”, said Gojkovic addressing the parliament speakers and deputy speakers from 58 countries.

Gojkovic said that it is up to the parliamentarians to defend and cultivate the culture of dialogue, atmosphere of trust and practice of partnership, adding that parliaments can build bridges of cooperation and contribute to new models of cooperation beneficial to all parties involved.

Gojkovic said that Serbia has often been the victim of the opposite of the principle of dialogue, trust and partnership i.e. the politics of force and disregard of international law, an example of which is the unilaterally declared independence of one part of the territory of the Republic of Serbia.

The Serbian Assembly Speaker said that Serbia perseveres in the efforts to renew the dialogue as a means to finding a sustainable, compromise and just solution, despite Pristina’s obstructions and unwillingness to commit to seeking a compromise.

Gojkovic went on to say that Serbia continues to work on establishing cooperation with the Eurasian Economic Union with which it is expected to sign a Free Trade Agreement on 25 October.

In addition to the many agreements on bilateral cooperation and strategic relations, the Parliament Speaker also mentioned Serbia’s participation in the Belt and Road Initiative and “17+1” cooperation format which affirms the country’s commitment to multilateral cooperation in the spheres of infrastructure, trade, science, technology and culture.

Gojkovic stressed that Serbia is ready to host one of the future meetings of speakers of Eurasian countries’ parliaments.

The Serbian Assembly Speaker reminded the attending that Belgrade will be hosting the 141st IPU Assembly on 13 – 17 October, one of the most important global parliamentary events, and invited the Eurasian parliament speakers to take part in the interparliamentary summit.

The 4th meeting of Speakers of Eurasian Countries’ Parliaments was opened by the first President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev, followed by keynote speeches by the Chairman of the Mazhilis (lower house) of the Parliament of Kazakhstan Nurlan Nigmatulin and Chairwoman of the Senate of Kazakhstan Dariga Nazarbayeva, as the host country, and the heads of the parliaments of the co-organizers Russia and Korea Vyacheslav Volodin and Moon Hee-sang respectively.

The meeting entitled "Greater Eurasia: Dialogue, Trust, Partnership", attended by over 40 speakers and 13 deputy speakers, as well as several hundred members of the national parliaments of Eurasian countries will be concluded with the adoption of a joint statement.

The National Assembly delegation also comprises Dragomir Karic, member of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with the Republic of Kazakhstan.
