Gojkovic: Children in Village Schools Must Have Same Conditions as Children in Cities

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and Chairperson of the Committee on the Rights of the Child Maja Gojkovic visited the satellite unit of Elementary School “22 December” in Gornja Trepca and on the occasion said that all the children in Serbia must have the same opportunities growing up.

“By visiting this school, I wanted to draw attention to village schools in Serbia. All children must have the same schooling conditions so that they could all be given the same prerequisites for a future, because they will surely become hard-working people who will help make Serbia a good place to live”, said Gojkovic.

The National Assembly Speaker said that investing additional efforts into improving the schooling conditions for children in rural areas must be a priority, highlighting the importance of the Serbian Government’s launching renovations of schools in Serbia. She said she was pleased the school in Gornja Trepca now has better equipment, desks and sanitation so that its pupils could study and grow in better conditions.

Gojkovic thanked the organisation Women and Health Alliance – WAHA International which had recognised the importance of supporting children in village schools and secured the donation of 160 school bags and supplies for schoolchildren.

After she and representatives of WAHA International gave the pupils their presents, Gojkovic announced the continuation of the cooperation with WAHA International which will focus on assisting and supporting children and women fighting cancer.

Milos Babic the organisation’s, regional coordinator, said that WAHA International has been operating in Serbia for just over a year, having begun its activity during the migrant crisis, but has expanded it to include support for Serbian citizens, primarily women and children.

„It is our organisation’s mission to provide healthcare and social support to women and children, and we have been welcomed by the authorities with whose help and joint initiatives we conduct our activities”, said Babic, adding that today’s donation was secured with the support of Etihad Airways.
