Fourth Sitting of the Environmental Protection Committee

At the sitting, held on 8 March 2021, the members of the Environmental Protection Committee reviewed the 2019 Report on the environmental situation in the Republic of Serbia, submitted by the Government.

The Report was presented by the Director of the Environmental Protection Agency Filip Radovic who said that the largest quantities of sulphur oxide, nitrogen oxide and suspended particles in 2019 were emitted by thermal power plants, chemical, mineral and food industries. In 2019 in the zone of Serbia and Vojvodina, the air, as stated in the report, was clean or slightly polluted, except in the cities of Valjevo, Kraljevo, Zajecar and Subotica, where it was excessively polluted. The air was also excessively polluted in all the agglomerations in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Pancevo, Nis, Bor, Smederevo, Kosjeric and Uzice, during the reporting year, and after three years of stagnation in Bor, the concentration of sulphur dioxide dangerous to human health, increased again.

The highest quantities of birch pollen grains were noted in Subotica, of grass in Kraljevo and ragweed in Obrenovac.

Speaking of water quality, Radovic said that according to the SWQI indicator, in the period 2009-2018 year, water quality has been improving on the territory of the Republic of Serbia, which is a growing trend.

The participants also discussed biodiversity, forests, hunting and fishing, concluding that 10,486 ha of new territory of the Republic of Serbia was protected in 2019, which is about 1.4% more than in 2018.

A total of 2,633 species of plants, animals and fungi were protected, 1,783 of which were put under strict protection.

Following a short discussion, the Chairman of the Focus Group for the Development of Control Mechanisms for the Process of Implementation of Sustainable Development Goals Dr Milorad Mijatovic, submitted an initiative organise a public hearing on World Water Day, 22 March 2021, with the topic: "Water purification and environmental protection."

The Committee members proceeded to adopt the 2019 Report on the environmental situation in the Republic of Serbia and accepted the proposed initiative for a public hearing on World Water Day.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Chairman Dr Ljubinko Rakonjac and attended by the following Committee members and deputy members: Gojko Palalic, Zarko Bogatinovic, Marko Bogdanovic, Tomislav Jankovic, Velibor Stanojevic, Vesna Krisanov, Nevenka Kostadinovic, Dragan M. Markovic, Ákos Újhelyi, Mina Kitanovic and Jasmina Karanac, as well as representatives of the Green Chair.
