Foreign Affairs Committee Chairperson and Members Meet with Spanish Senate’s Foreign Affairs Committee Delegation

The Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee Marina Ragus and the Committee members met today with the delegation of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Senate of the Kingdom of Spain, headed by Committee Chairperson Pilar Rojo.

Marina Ragus thanked Spain for its consistent support for Serbia’s territorial integrity and sovereignty. She recalled the precedent in international relations set by NATO's aggression against the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia, which was a precondition for the de facto seizure of part of Serbian territory, and which still has far-reaching geopolitical consequences through the boomerang effect.

She stressed that Serbia, despite the injustice it faces today, as it did then, including the ghettoization of the Serbian people in Kosovo-Metohija, remains firmly committed to peace, stability, respect for international law and the United Nations Charter, resolutions and conventions that represent a guarantee of peace in the region. As well as to its strategic commitment, which is EU membership.

The Committee Chairperson also pointed to a series of disturbing events that, she said, evoke memories of difficult periods in the past, including the adoption of the resolution on Srebrenica, the lack of a reaction by the European Union to the public promotion of Ustasha ideology, as well as the continued violation of human and civil rights of Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija.

She emphasised that Serbia will never recognize the independence of so-called Kosovo, nor its membership in the United Nations, but that it will always be committed to dialogue, cooperation and finding ways for Serbia to stop being viewed through the prism of narratives created during the 1990s.

The Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Senate of the Kingdom of Spain, Pilar Rojo, emphasised her satisfaction with the visit to Serbia and belief that it will contribute to the further improvement of interparliamentary cooperation and overall friendly relations between the two countries. She stressed that Spain is a traditional friend of Serbia, that it will continue to support its territorial integrity and sovereignty, as well as its path toward membership in the European Union, and is ready to share its experiences in the process.

She stressed that in times of great geopolitical challenges, the world needs a strong and coherent Europe, within which Serbia must have its place. She also expressed concern about the difficult situation facing Serbs in Kosovo-Metohija, emphasising that Spain is aware of these circumstances and is open to any type of cooperation that would contribute to overcoming the crisis.

The Head of the delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, Biljana Pantic Pilja, and delegation member Aleksandar Mirkovic expressed their gratitude for the exceptional and high-quality cooperation with the Spanish delegation to the PACE.

Jovan Palalic gave an overview of the economic cooperation between the two countries.

The members of both committees agreed that continuous and frequent meetings are very important, thanking each other for their mutual and principled support in all formats.

Everyone agreed that the excellent and friendly relations should be deepened and intensified.
