First Sitting of the Committee on the Rights of the Child

The Committee on the Rights of the Child held its first sitting on 16 September 2024.

The sitting was convened by National Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabic, as stipulated in Article 25 of the National Assembly Rules of Procedure.

By majority vote, the Committee members elected MP Zagorka Aleksic from the United Serbia Parliamentary Group, Committee Deputy Chairperson.

In the continuation of the sitting, the Committee Chairperson proposed two priorities for the Committee to focus on, one of which is the prevention of all forms of violence against children and the monitoring of the work of the "I'll keep you safe" platform, as well as cooperation with the Government and relevant ministries to improve the work of this platform and find solutions which the National Assembly could help with. The second priority would be to work more actively to support children with exceptional abilities, because, the Committee Chairperson stressed, we as a society owe that to the citizens and children, and at the same time, it is a guarantee of a sustainable future in the Republic of Serbia. She then invited the members and deputy members of the Committee to delegate topics of importance for the work of the Committee, and in the conversation that followed, there were proposals for the formation of a Subcommittee for the Rights of the Child in Rural Areas, continuation of the work of the Working Group for initiatives, proposals and petitions, and consideration of topics such as children's right to potable and clean water, prevention of discrimination against children, children's right to education, preventive medical examinations of children and the introduction of the topic of health into the educational system and others.

At the end of the sitting, the Committee Chairperson informed the Committee members about the coming Children's Week, celebrated in the first week of October, and informed them about the Committee’s past support of this event. The Chairperson also added that the next sitting will be held by the end of the month, in order to agree on its future agenda.
