European Integration Committee Delegation Takes Part in COSAC Chairpersons’ Meeting

National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the European Integration Committee Elvira Kovacs and European Integration Committee member Ana Miljanic took part in the meeting of the Chairpersons of the Conference of Parliamentary Committees for Union Affairs of Parliaments of the European Union (COSAC), held in Copenhagen, on 3 and 4 July 2025, under the auspices of the Danish Presidency of the Council of the EU.

The meeting was opened by the Deputy Speaker of the Danish Parliament, Lars-Christian Brask, while the priorities of the Danish Presidency were presented by the Minister for European Affairs, Marie Bjerre. The COSAC meeting in Copenhagen brought together the chairpersons of the European Affairs Committees of the parliaments of EU member states, the candidate countries and potential candidates for EU membership.

National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the European Integration Committee Elvira Kovacs stressed that the priorities set by the Danish Presidency are in line with Serbia's aspirations, but that we must still speak openly about the reality that some candidates like Serbia face on their path to the EU. She stated that, despite the commitment to reforms, Serbia has not yet opened Cluster 3, although we have been technically ready for years. She added that this delay is not only discouraging for our citizens, but also sends a broader message - that readiness and reforms may no longer be the only criteria in the accession process. She called on the Danish Presidency to use its leadership to restore the credibility of the enlargement process - not only with words, but also with concrete actions. She said that Serbia remains a committed partner of the European Union, that we share the same values, face the same challenges and strive for the same future.

During her speech on the topic “Ukraine and European Security and Defence”, she emphasised that Serbia respects the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Ukraine within its internationally recognised borders, adding that this position is based on our commitment to the principles of international law. She said that Serbia is not indifferent to this situation, on the contrary, it has provided humanitarian and financial assistance to Ukraine and continues to support diplomatic efforts towards a peaceful solution. She emphasised, however, that it is important to speak frankly about the complexity of Serbia's position in this changing geopolitical environment, and stated that due to our energy dependence, Serbia faces structural constraints that prevent us from joining the sanctions against the Russian Federation. She also stated that our recent experience with sanctions has left deep scars and that we know very well that sanctions often harm ordinary people more than those in power.

On the sidelines of the conference, the members of the delegation of the European Integration Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia spoke with several MPs, arranged a visit by the Chairman of the Committee on European Affairs of Italy, a visit to Hungary, and spoke with MPs from the region about continuing regional cooperation.

The plenary COSAC meeting under the Danish EU Presidency will be held from 30 November to 2 December 2025 in Copenhagen.
