European Integration Committee Delegation Meets with Italian Parliament’s Committee on EU Policies Delegation

European Integration Committee Chairperson Elvira Kovacs, and the Committee members, met today in the National Assembly with a delegation of the Committee on European Union Policies of the Italian Parliament, headed by Chairman Alessandro Giglio Vigna.

Elvira Kovacs said that the two countries have had exceptional relations in recent years and thanked Italy for its continued support for the European integration of Serbia and the entire Western Balkans region.

She pointed out that in case of Serbia, this process has been going on for a long time and the National Assembly has previously adopted laws important for the opening of Cluster 3, such as media laws, amendments to the Law on the Unified Electoral Roll and elected eight of the nine members of the Council of the Regulatory Authority for Electronic Media. Kovacs said that the deceleration in the European integration process is affecting the growth of Euroscepticism among Serbian citizens, but also emphasised that the vast majority of MPs in the National Assembly support Serbia's membership in the EU.

Alessandro Giglio Vigna stressed that it is of great importance for Italy, as well as for the entire European Union, that Serbia and the countries in the region become its members, pointing to the current geopolitical situation in Europe. He said that the Mediterranean and Balkan countries share a similar mentality, and assessed that they would cooperate well within the EU.

He stressed that Italy is committed to opening Cluster 3 as soon as possible, adding that the EU itself is not monolithic and that there are constant debates within it, both between states and among political groups in the European Parliament, on all current topics, including the issue of EU enlargement.

The meeting with the Italian delegation was attended by European Integration Committee Deputy Chairman Milan Radin, as well as Committee members Dunja Simonovic Bratic, Ana Miljanic and Branislav Josifovic.

They exchanged opinions with the guests about Serbia's European integration prospects, conditions for membership, as well as current developments within the EU itself.
