European Integration Committee Chairperson Meets with Head of European Union Delegation to Serbia
National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the European Integration Committee, Elvira Kovacs, met today with the Head of the European Union delegation to the Republic Serbia Andreas von Beckerath.
The officials spoke about the role the National Assembly and the European Integration Committee play in Serbia’s European integration process and exchanged opinions on the ongoing processes of election of REM Council members and the adoption of amendments and modifications to the Law on the Unified Electoral Roll.
Elvira Kovacs said that the majority of MPs support Serbia’s EU accession and drew attention to the European Integration Committee’s efficient work both on the legislative plane through the evaluation of the level of harmonisation of the bills with the European law, and on its supervisory role. She especially emphasised the Committee’s bilateral and multilateral activities reflected in different meetings and regional initiatives.
She expressed regret about the lengthy REM Council members’ election process, as well as the difficulties encountered in the drafting of the amendments and modifications to the Law on the Unified Electoral Roll.
Andreas von Beckerath deemed that the rule of law, electoral reform and freedom of the media are priorities for Serbia’s progress in the path to EU membership, adding that what is needed is the inclusivity of these processes as well as the full implementation of the reform laws.
Kovacs and Von Beckerath agreed that through joint efforts the citizens should be given a detailed overview of the benefits and positive aspects of Serbia’s membership in the European Union, so as to secure better support for it and mitigate Euroscepticism.
