Eighth Sitting of the Environmental Protection Committee

At the sitting held on 4 June 2021, the members of the Environmental Protection Committee were briefed on the initiative to set up a green councillors’ group in the Sremska Mitrovica City Assembly.


Deputy Mayor Petar Savandzic welcomed the attending and thanked the Environmental Protection Committee for having its first sitting outside the National Assembly seat in Sremska Mitrovica.

MP Tomislav Jankovic informed the Committee about the first item on the agenda - the initiative to set up a green councillors’ group in the Sremska Mitrovica City Assembly, pointing out that this sitting is a sign of the Committee’s commitment to bring the MPs closer to the problems of the citizens at the local level and facilitate finding solutions to them. He presented the goals the City of Sremska Mitrovica had achieved in the past few years, adding that they were the originators of idea to set up a green councillors’ group, something the National Assembly already has experience with. He added that the city had applied for project "Sustainable Development for All", platform for local dialogue, and its public call issued to partner civil society organisations and local governments to send proposals for joint initiatives and mechanisms for the active participation of citizens in all decision-making processes at the level of local communities. The general goal is to boost participation of civil society organisations and the public in the region of Srem in the procedures of creating public policies and making decisions at the level of the local community, in connection with the field of environmental protection and sustainable development goals.

Jovan Kovacic briefed the Committee on the second item on the agenda - operation of Regional Landfill Srem-Macva Sremska Mitrovica. He said that in 2006 the city of Sremska Mitrovica and the city of Sabac signed a Cooperation Agreement related to the establishment of a solid waste management scheme. Based on that Agreement, in 2011 the two cities signed an Agreement on the construction, management and use of a regional solid waste management system on the territories of the two cities. On 25 March 2011, the Sremska Mitrovica City Assembly and the Sabac City Assembly established the Public Utility Company Regional Landfill "Srem-Macva", with headquarters in Sremska Mitrovica. The regional landfill started trial operation in 2014. The project covers three phases of construction, two of which have been completed so far.

The sitting was chaired by Committee Chairman Dr Ljubinko Rakonjac and attended by the following Committee members and deputy members: Gojko Palalic, Zarko Bogatinovic, Marija Todorovic, Tomislav Jankovic, Jelena Obradovic, Nevenka Kostadinova, Dragan M. Markovic and Samira Cosovic.

The committee sitting outside of the National Assembly seat was held with the support of project “Strengthening Parliamentary Democracy and Inclusive Political Dialogue” conducted by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) with the support of the Switzerland.
