Members of the Serbian National Assembly delegation to the Assembly of the Western European Union, Donka Banovic and Milos Jevtic, today met the Vice-President of the Assembly of the Western European Union, and the Rapporteur of its Political Committee, Gerd Hoefer. Mr Hoefer’s visit is aimed at discovering Serbia’s official positions on the future status of Kosovo and Metohia to be used in preparing a report on the European Union and security in South-Eastern Europe, which will be discussed at a sitting of the Western European Union Assembly this June.

The Deputies acquainted Mr Hoefer with provisions of the Serbian Constitution stipulating that Kosovo and Metohia is an integral part of Serbia’s territory and enjoys fundamental autonomy within the sovereign state of Serbia. The proposal for a solution for the status of Kosovo and Metohia put forward by the UN Security Council’s Special Envoy, Martti Ahttisaari, is unacceptable for Serbia – a fact underscored by the Serbian Assembly in its Resolution of 14 February 2007. The Resolution explicitly underlines that the Ahttisaari proposal infringes on fundamental principles of international law, and does not take into account the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Serbia with respect to Kosovo. Any imposed solution for the province’s future status will be declared illegitimate, illegal, and null and void.

The Deputies stressed that Serbia was firmly committed to peace, security and stability in the region. Continuing negotiation, and reaching a compromise solution acceptable both for the Serbian state and the majority population of Kosovo and Metohia, they said, would ensure stability for both Serbia and the region, and make possible a shift of focus towards issues of development and European integrations.
