Defence and Internal Affairs Committee Members Meet with Algerian Parliamentary Delegation

The members of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee met with a delegation of the Algeria-Serbia Parliamentary Friendship Group visiting the National Assembly.

The Chairman of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee MA Milovan Drecun stressed that our two countries have historically good relations, adding that parliamentary and military-economic cooperation is at a high level, but that economic relations are below potential, and that parliamentary diplomacy can play a significant role in encouraging their development.

Drecun thanked Algeria for its principled stance in defending international law in terms of non-recognition of the self-declared independence of so-called Kosovo. "National minorities must not be allowed to redraw the borders of United Nations member states by force," Drecun said, thanking Algeria for supporting Serbia in international organizations, such as Interpol and UNESCO.

Samira Barhoum, Head of the Algeria-Serbia Parliamentary Friendship Group, said that the political relations between the two countries are characterised by mutual respect and a partnership in the fight against cross-border and organised crime. She added that Algeria appreciates Serbia's neutral position on the Western Sahara and, like Algeria, respects international law.

Drecun and Barhoum agreed that in the modern world, full of security risks, military and security cooperation is vital, both in the exchange of information, as well as in improving intervention capacities and working together on new technologies. They assessed that Algeria's experiences in the fight against terrorism are extremely useful and represent a good model for other countries facing similar threats.

MA Milovan Drecun pointed out the possibility of connecting the two parliaments’ committees responsible for defence so they can discuss topics of mutual benefit and exchange experiences concerning legislative work in this area.

The meeting was attended by the Committee Deputy Chairman Darko Jovanovic, as well as Committee members Dragan M. Markovic, Mitar Kovac, Ugljesa Markovic and Milos Gnjidic. In the discussion with the Algerian parliamentary delegation, they agreed that security challenges such as terrorism, organised and cybercrime, and migration require cooperation and joint action, both bilaterally and multilaterally. They also pointed out the importance of improving cooperation in the field of military studies.
