Dacic: Serbia Remains Firmly Committed to the Goals And Principles of the UN Charter

Addressing a joint press conference co-organized by the Government of the Republic of Serbia and the UN team in Serbia to mark the 75th anniversary of the existence and work of the United Nations, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Ivica Dacic said that this year’s UN Day is another opportunity to recall the basic principles to which we have all committed ourselves by signing the Charter, such as the sovereign equality of states, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, renunciation of the use of force and peaceful settlement of disputes.

At the very beginning of his address, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Ivica Dacic, stressed how pleased he was to once again speak on the United Nations Day, celebrated at the UN House, to the opening of which he personally contributed.

“This year's UN Day is of special significance, as it is the jubilee year when we mark the 75th anniversary of the founding of the UN, the only global international organization that emerged from the ruins of World War II, which has for more than seven decades been the backbone of the multilateral world order and the platform for equitable dialogue between states with the aim of preserving peace and stability, protecting human rights and creating the conditions for economic development worldwide. We are proud that Yugoslavia, of which Serbia is one of the successors, is one of the founders of the UN and one of the first fifty signatory states to the organization’s Charter," said the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Ivica Dacic, pointing out that this important jubilee is another opportunity to remind ourselves of the basic principles we all embraced by signing the Charter, such as sovereign equality of states, respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity and peaceful settlement of disputes.

"Serbia remains firmly committed to the goals and principles of this document, convinced that today they are more relevant than ever. There is no doubt that the situation the world finds itself in today requires joint action, solidarity and cooperation. The current COVID-19 pandemic has shown that no country is an isolated "island" and regardless of its level of development and existing capacities, it cannot cope with the complex consequences of this crisis on its own. The role of the UN and its specialized agencies lies precisely in concentrating and directing joint efforts towards overcoming the challenges we face. Therefore, continuous work is needed to adjust and strengthen the efficiency of the UN system, in order to be ready for current and future challenges. I would like to take the opportunity to express my gratitude to the UN for its support and assistance in the fight against the pandemic, primarily through cooperation on joint projects and commitment to the improvement of our health system,” said Ivica Dacic.

He reminded the attending that Serbia assigns special importance to the UN in the context of preserving its territorial integrity and sovereignty, thus defending not only its own national interests, but also international law and the key principles of the Charter.

"We take every opportunity to stress that UN Security Council Resolution 1244, which confirms the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Serbia, remains in force. UNMIK's status of neutral presence in undiminished scope continues to be essential for stability and the creation of conditions that should lead to a lasting and sustainable solution to the issue of Kosovo-Metohija, and we expect this mission to continue to implement its mandate. I assure you that we remain committed to finding a compromise solution to the issue of Kosovo and Metohija, with the desire to build stability, prosperity and a better future for all through dialogue and cooperation", said the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia.

Ivica Dacic went on to point out that the adoption of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is a key step in facing some of today’s biggest challenges of and Serbia is firmly committed to its implementation, making intensive efforts at the national level to implement all three dimensions of sustainable development and striving to improve living conditions for all, primarily the young and generations to come

"We will agree that the COVID-19 pandemic pointed to the weakness of the global socio-economic systems and made the importance of achieving the Sustainable Development Goals all the more visible, where the 2030 Agenda represents a kind of a “map" leading to an effective solution to the problems caused by the pandemic," said Ivica Dacic.

At the end of his address, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia, Ivica Dacic, once again congratulated UN Day, wishing that in the coming period, and in accordance with the overreaching theme of the 75th anniversary, we jointly build "the future we want and the UN we need", in order to find solutions to the security, socio-economic and humanitarian challenges facing all of humanity.
