Cooperation between Serbia and Armenia Can Always Be Stronger

Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic and the Head of the Parliamentary Group of Friendship with Armenia Aleksandar Cotric met today with the Ambassador of the Republic of Armenia on a non-residential basis H.E. Ashot Hovakimian.

At the beginning of the meeting, Prof. Dr Zarko Obradovic welcomed the Ambassador, stressing that he was well aware that coming to Serbia in the pandemic was not an easy task and added that Serbia is the first in Europe to offer vaccines from different manufacturers and an example to other countries, because there is no bigger honour to state leadership than to serve its people and work for its benefit. Obradovic added that over two million citizens have been vaccinated in Serbia and that the number is increasing, thanks to the state’s vaccination campaign. He also spoke about the political and economic relations between the two countries, stating that they are good, but that there is always room for cooperation, especially at the parliamentary level and at the level of international institutions. He stressed that both countries have an obligation to raise awareness with their governments to strengthen economic co-operation. He took the opportunity to once again thank Armenia for the principled position of non-recognition of the unilaterally proclaimed state of Kosovo, which is important for both Serbia and the world, because if the established principles of freedom are not respected, the whole world could go be derailed.

Aleksandar Cotric congratulated Armenia on its sports achievements, hoping that these successes would be accompanied by cooperation between Serbia and Armenia in the political and economic field. He also stated that although the two countries are geographically distant, they share a strong spiritual connection. He pointed out a number of similarities between the two countries, from GDP growth, fight against crime, preservation of territorial integrity and sovereignty and the preservation of cultural and historical heritage. He underlined that Yerevan was the first country in the world to accept Christianity, and that another similarity between the two countries is in their opposition to attempts to erase their historical and cultural heritage. He said that, over 150 churches and monasteries in the Autonomous Province of Kosovo-Metohija have been damaged and destroyed since 1999 to date. He wished Armenia luck in the upcoming elections with the hope that if the elections are held, they will take place in a peaceful and democratic atmosphere. He also mentioned the importance of Russia's peaceful mediating role on the territory of Karabakh and expressed hope for the return of the Armenian population to this area and the protection of citizens and cultural and historical property.

Ashot Hovakimian congratulated Serbia on the successful corona vaccination campaign, adding that Armenia has yet to start vaccinating its citizens against the virus and expects the first package of the COVAX programme of 24,000 vaccines. The Ambassador reminded his hosts that the Armenian delegation was the last delegation in Serbia before the pandemic in March last year, and conveyed the invitation to the Serbian parliamentary delegation, headed by the National Assembly Speaker, to visit Armenia on Martyr Day or Remembrance Day of Victims of Genocide in WWI, 24 April. The Ambassador emphasized the importance of fostering ties and cooperating in inter-parliamentary organisations, such as the Council of Europe, considering that Serbia and Armenia have a large number of common topics that they could defend together. The Ambassador added that Serbia's support of the trilateral agreement signed by Armenia, Russia and Azerbaijan would be important, in connection with the territory of Karabakh and the creation of conditions for a permanent solution to the conflict.
