Conference on Public Policies and Practice in the Fight against Corruption

The citizens expect the fight against corruption to give results, stressed National Assembly Speaker Prof. Dr Slavica Djukic Dejanovic addressing the participants of the conference on “Public Policies and Practice in the Fight against Corruption”.

The conference was organised by the Anti-Corruption Agency to mark 9 December, International Anti-Corruption Day. At the gathering at the Palace of Serbia, National Assembly Speaker Slavica Djukic Dejanovic deemed that a declarative statement against corruption weakens and deadens the fight against the “scourge so powerful that it can render all the efforts society invests into development meaningless”.

“The legal grounds for a decisive and manifest fight against corruption do exist” stressed Djukic Dejanovic. “The National Assembly has ratified international agreements, conventions and additional protocols to conventions in the anti-corruption sphere by which we assumed the obligation to cooperate with international institutions and organisations active in the sphere. The Agency closely cooperates with organisations such as GRECO, while the National Assembly, among other things, through the activities of its MPs and working bodies, controls the implementation of these documents in practice".

The National Assembly Speaker stated that what she personally finds devastating is that despite the fact that as much as 50% of the citizens say that corruption significantly influences both their familial and private life, they mainly perceive political corruption. She added that as much as 81% of the citizens believe that corruption is wide-spread in this sphere which the people see as trading in influence.

"All of us participating in political life bear the great responsibility of changing that perception and the situation causing it and I believe that we have already taken the first step by adopting, in June of this year, the Law on Financing Political Activities, and the amendments and modifications to the Law on Election of Deputies which strengthen the integrity of the popular representatives by providing a basis for their ethical conduct. The fact that this year we have begun the practice of reporting followed by deliberations on the report of the Anti-Corruption Agency by the NARS is just as important, as is that fact that the Assembly planned its control work based on the recommendations laid out by the Agency in its first Annual Report, adopted on 14 July 2011”, stated Djukic Dejanovic.

The Speaker concluded that each citizen has the right to request that the institutions of the system address the problems the citizens approach them with in a responsible manner and as stipulated by the law. Those who have bigger rights and possibilities also have bigger responsibilities, said Djukic Dejanovic, stressing that the National Assembly would do all within its scope to strengthen the anti-corruption mechanisms.
