Committee Chairman Petar Petrovic briefed the members of the Venice Commission on the Committee’s work and scope and the procedure the National Assembly employs when discussing and adopting the bills it receives. He thanked the representatives of the Venice Commission for its expert assistance and opinions as regards judiciary legislation.
The members of the Venice Commission commended Serbia’s determination to tackle corruption and crime, which is a vital precondition for the establishment of a legal state. Analysing the drafts of the amendments and modifications to the Law on Judges, Law on Organisation of Courts and the Law on Public Prosecution, they said that setting clear criteria for the election of judges, as a prerequisite for the establishment of an independent judiciary in Serbia, should be the key priority in the upcoming period.
In the meeting, the delegation exchanged views with the members of the Committee on the Judiciary, Public Administration and Local Self-Government on the current situation in the judiciary, the work of the High Judicial Council and the draft amendments and modifications to the three laws currently under revision.
In addition to the Committee Chairman, the meeting was also attended by Committee members Nenad Konstantinovic, Svetislava Bulajic, Laszlo Varga, Milica Radovic, Srdjan Spasojevic and Pavle Markov.
