ASEAN Receives National Assembly’s Request for Serbia to Become ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly Associate Member

The Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) received the request of the National Assembly for Serbia to become an associate member of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly.

Serbia signed the document on accession to the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia, at the 43rd summit of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), held last year.

ASEAN is a political, economic and cultural organisation of countries located in Southeast Asia. Since its formation on 8 August 1967 at the initiative of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand, the organisation's membership has expanded to include Brunei, Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, and Vietnam.

The most important areas of cooperation between ASEAN and the signatory countries of the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia are, among others, economic cooperation, education and development of people-to-people contacts, science, technology and innovation, and sustainable development.

Serbia joined this organisation with the aim of continuing cooperation with friendly countries in Southeast Asia, dating back to the period of the Non-Aligned Movement.
