50th Anniversary of the Death of Konrad Adenauer

The National Assembly House hosted a commemoration of the 50th anniversary of the death of Konrad Adenauer, entitled “Europe speech - with faith in the future”.

Opening the gathering, Director of the Konrad Adenauer Foundation Serbia Norbert Beckmann-Dierkes thanked National Assembly Speaker Maja Gojkovic for making it possible to commemorate this important date at the Serbian Parliament.

“The parliament is the exactly right place for this event because it is the place of democracy, freedom and development and Adenauer was a statesman and a visionary, the first democratic Chancellor of Germany and a founder of the European Union. His ideas of a united Europe live on today and all the challenges can be overcome though cooperation grounded in common principles and values.” Speaking of Serbia, Dierkes mentioned the recent presidential election which was recognized by the foreign observers as one more step toward stabilization of democracy.

National Assembly Speaker Maja Gojkovic said that Adenauer believed that uniting Europe around common goals is the only way to build trust, peace, stability and ensure economic development, and today, under far better conditions, cooperation remains the only way to achieve these common goals.

“It is our duty to the citizens to work hard and patiently seek solutions based on common principles and values for all the challenges Europe faces today, and it is the duty of European leaders to share the vision and resolve of Adenauer and his contemporaries”, said Gojkovic.

The Chair of the Bundestag Parliamentary Friendship Group with South-Eastern Europe Stephan Albani also addressed the gathering. Speaking of the life and work of Konrad Adenauer he said that the German statesman knew that the war should never happen again, but he was aware that freedom and democracy have to be won and protected every day, as evidenced by current events around the world.

Albani described Adenauer as the founder of a democratic and successful Germany, the fruit of whose work remains greatly important for Europe today.

Speaking of the cooperation between the two countries, Albani said that the relations between Serbia and Germany have been significantly furthered in the last few years, as evidenced by Germany’s considerable investment into Serbia. He also underlined the significance of Serbia’s clear pro-European orientation and its progress on that path.
