45th Sitting of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee

At the joint sitting held on 25 November, the National Assembly’s Defence and Internal Affairs Committee and the Security Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Srpska discussed the security situation in the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Srpska, legislative framework and the committees’ activities.

Marija Obradovic, Chairperson of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee welcomed the colleagues from the Security Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Srpska, hoping for an intensification of cooperation between the two committees.

The Committees then proceeded to exchange experiences concerning their respective modes of operation.

Milanko Mihajlica, Chairman of the Security Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Srpska, explained the Committee’s mode of operation and activities, saying that, in terms of the security situation in the Republic of Srpska there are several thousand potential persons who could carry out or in some way be party to a terrorist attack, but despite these challenges the security situation is satisfactory. Mihajlica also added that the Committee was planning to soon organise gatherings against terrorism and organised crime and invited the members of the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia to take part in them.

Mihajlica said that the Security Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Srpska models it work after the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and wished that the two committees improve the existing relationship.

Marija Obradovic said that the Defence and Internal Affairs Committee and the Security Services Control Committee had a joint sitting last week and concluded that the security situation in the Republic of Serbia is stable despite the ongoing migrant crisis and the situation in Europe following the terrorist attacks in Paris on 13 November, and that adequate additional security measures have been instated to ensure a high level of security of the citizens.

The two committees concluded that the security measures in the Republic of Serbia and the Republic of Srpska are at a high level.

The joint sitting was followed by a joint press conference of the two committee chairpersons. Click here to watch the press conference.
