24th Sitting of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality

At the sitting held on 15 April, the members of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality reviewed the Ombudsman’s 2014 Regular Annual Report and the Commissioner for Protection of Equality 2014 Regular Annual Report.


The sitting was attended by Ombudsman Sasa Jankovic and Commissioner for Protection of Equality Nevena Petrusic.
Presenting the 2014 Regular Annual Report, Ombudsman Sasa Jankovic said that 23,340 citizens had addressed the Ombudsman in the last year mainly complaining about bad administration. Jankovic also said that the authorities to a high degree, 81.90%, accepted the Ombudsman’s recommendations and eliminated the detected irregularities. The Ombudsman presented to the Committee members and MPs an estimate of the degree to which the economic, cultural and social rights of the citizens, rights of children and young people, persons with disabilities, national minorities and freedom of expression are respected and the activities the Ombudsman had undertaken on the issues.
In the course of a lengthy discussion, the Committee members and MPs shared their views and asked for additional information on the estimates and the Ombudsman’s activities relating to public administration bodies, the status of national minorities and their representation in public authorities.
Presenting the Commissioner for Protection of Equality 2014 Regular Annual Report, Commissioner for Protection of Equality Nevena Petrusic outlined the most important activities conducted in the past year, gave a breakdown of the general situation and recommendations in the field of protection against discrimination. The Commissioner said that nationality and ethnicity emerged as the most common bases of discrimination, while the complaints mainly concerned discrimination in the employment process and at the workplace. Nevena Petrusic also presented the results of the public polls and polls conducted among public administration officers on discrimination in Serbia.
In the course of the debate, the Committee members and MPs commended the work of the Commissioner for Protection of Equality in the last five years. They emphasised the importance of monitoring the implementation of the adopted anti-discrimination legislation and ratified conventions. They also spoke about domestic violence and gender discrimination, and well as discrimination based on nationality.
Committee Chairman Meho Omerovic said that the Committee will proceed to formulate conclusions on the reviewed Ombudsman’s 2014 Regular Annual Report and Commissioner for Protection of Equality 2014 Regular Annual Report and forward them to the National Assembly for consideration.
