On the occasion, Zeitlin presented the Report of the OSCE Chair-in-Office on Gender Issues on the situation as regards gender equality in the Republic of Serbia.
The Chairman of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality pointed out that after the completion of the Report, Serbia conducted parliamentary elections according to the new Law on Election of MPs which boosted the percentage of women at the National Assembly raising it from 22% to 33.6%. Meho Omerovic briefed the representative of the OSCE Chair-in-Office on Gender Issues on the work and activities of the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality, in the new legislature. He assured her that the integration of the sphere of gender equality into the Committee on Human and Minority Rights and Gender Equality would not diminish the importance of the issue, but rather contribute to its further affirmation. The officials noted that the Committee had had a lot of activities aimed at promoting gender equality and combating violence against women, within a very short time.
In the course of the meeting, the officials also discussed the implementation of United Nations Security Council Resolution 1325 on Women, Peace and Security, as well as the Committee’s actions as regards the report on the implementation of the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW).
