National Assembly Speaker Meets with Italian Senate Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee Chairperson

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Ana Brnabic met today with the Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee of the Senate of Italy Stefania Craxi.

Brnabic thanked Craxi for the support Italy provides to Serbia on the way to full membership in the European Union, pointing out that a speedy integration of the Western Balkans into the EU is a guarantee for the prosperity and stability of both our region and Europe as a whole. Craxi said that her support for Serbia is sincere and that she also hopes that Serbia would join the European Union as soon as possible, because she believes that Serbia belongs there.

At the meeting, the officials concluded that the cooperation between Serbia and Italy is extremely good and has recently been further improved by numerous bilateral meetings between the two countries’ dignitaries. Brnabic reminded the guest that Italy was our third largest foreign trade partner in 2023 and the second largest investor in Serbia. On the other hand, Serbia is Italy's largest foreign trade partner in the Western Balkans.

Brnabic and Craxi expressed their satisfaction that this year marks 145 years since the establishment of diplomatic relations between Serbia and Italy and 15 years since the establishment of the strategic partnership between the two countries. Modern technologies and artificial intelligence were highlighted at the meeting as the areas that provide ample room for further improvement of cooperation between Serbia and Italy.

The Parliament Speaker thanked Mrs Craxi for her significant contribution to security and stability in Kosovo-Metohija, through the engagement of the Italian army as part of KFOR, especially for the protection of the Visoki Decani Monastery.

The meeting was attended by the Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia and Chairperson of the Foreign Affairs Committee Marina Ragus, Jovan Palalic, Head of the Parliamentary Friendship Group with Italy, as well as the Italian Ambassador to Serbia Luca Gori.
