National Assembly Speaker Meets with European Commission’s Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations Director General

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Ana Brnabic met today with the Director General of the European Commission’s Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations Gert Jan Koopman.

The officials discussed key issues concerning the continued fulfilment of conditions Serbia needs to meet so as to open of Cluster 3, competitiveness and sustainable development, as well as the acceleration of the country’s European integration process.

Speaker Brnabic emphasised Serbia's commitment to European integration and thanked the guest for his support in the implementation of essential reforms, stressing that the European path remains our priority.

They also discussed the election of REM council members and the Working Group for the Improvement of the Electoral Process, with Brnabic emphasising that, for the first time in the history of Serbian parliamentarism, the Working Group is chaired by a representative of civil society. She also informed Koopman that certain parliamentary opposition parties do not participate in the work.

Koopman stressed the EU's readiness to support Serbia on its path towards the EU, in line with Serbia's ambition to complete preparations for accession by the end of 2026. He expressed confidence that Serbia would soon achieve the steps it committed to in December 2024, including in key areas of the rule of law, which Member States have indicated will lead to the long-awaited opening of Cluster 3.

The implementation of the EU Growth Plan for the Western Balkans and Serbia's Reform Agenda were also discussed. The timely implementation of the Reform Agenda could bring Serbia an additional 1.6 billion Euros to support reforms needed on the path to the EU and major projects in the areas of infrastructure, energy, environmental protection, research and innovation, all for the benefit of the citizens and economy of Serbia.

The meeting was also attended by Elvira Kovacs, National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Chairperson of the European Integration Committee, Tanja Miscevic, Minister for European Integration, Danijel Apostolovic, Ambassador in the Mission of the Republic of Serbia to the EU, and the Head of the European Union Delegation to Serbia Emanuele Giaufret.
