Gojkovic with OSCE PA President

The Speaker of the National Assembly of the Republic of Serbia Maja Gojkovic met today with OSCE Parliamentary Assembly President George Tsereteli, taking part in the 141st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Belgrade, 13 – 17 October.


Gojkovic and Tsereteli talked about the importance of the dialogue at the Belgrade IPU Assembly and regional cooperation and the Serbian Assembly Speaker informed the OSCE PA President about the dialogue in Serbia aimed at improving the pre-election atmosphere and the work of the parliament.

Gojkovic said that there is room to advance the Parliamentary mechanisms reminding the guest that Serbia had after the European Commission’s Report adopted a series of measures to improve the work of the parliament, resulting in the return of part of the MPs who boycotter the parliament to the legislative body’s sessions.

Gojkovic said that the parliament is the house of democracy and dialogue, opining that the 141st Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Belgrade has proven that dialogue is the key to facing challenges and different views.

Gojkovic said that the Serbian Assembly is open to furthering its operation and the atmosphere for the coming elections.

Speaking of the media environment and the work of the REM, Gojkovic said that the Serbian Assembly is prepared to organize a meeting and debate to make sure everyone is represented in the election campaign.

Tsereteli talked about the importance of the dialogue in light of the coming elections, saying that the OSCE is one of the leading organizations ready to help overcome the challenges and advance legislation to achieve progress. The OSCE PA President said that the OSCE Mission to Serbia is ready to offer support to overcome the challenges in the context of the coming elections, adding that inclusivity is paramount and that boycott always hurts the boycotters. Tsereteli said it is important to use the OSCE mechanisms to improve the election process.

Tsereteli also stressed that it is important to strengthen dialogue and that the OSCE PA wishes to become a stronger and more effective parliament that would address social problems, adding that his organization would in the coming period be focusing on the coming elections, electoral legislation and the media environment.

The OSCE PA President said that the delegation of the Serbian Assembly is very active in the OSCE PA and an important member of the organization.
