Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Borko Stefanovic Meets with Japanese Ambassador to Serbia

The Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee Borko Stefanovic met today with the Japanese Ambassador to Serbia H.E. Takahiko Katsumata to discuss the bilateral cooperation between the two countries which they opined has ample room for improvement.

At the beginning of the meeting, Stefanovic pointed out that the 140 years of friendship between Serbia and Japan has very deep roots. He opined that the two countries could have closer cooperation, regardless of the geographical distance, and that there is room to improve relations at almost all levels. He emphasised the importance of Japanese investments in Serbia, which set high business standards that many foreign companies that have representative offices in Serbia can emulate. He added that it is our country’s job to attract a larger number of Japanese companies and factories, because it would strengthen the Serbian economy.

H.E. Takahiko Katsumata congratulated Stefanovic on being elected National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee, stressing how pleased he was with the meeting. He added that Japan sees Serbia as the leading and most stable country in the region and that the Open Balkans initiative can be an excellent mechanism for attracting Japanese investments to this part of Europe. As he said, his task in the coming period will be the exchange of high-level visits, which have become rare in the past two years due to the global epidemiological crisis.

In the course of the meeting, the officials exchanged opinions on the energy crisis threatening Europe, Serbia’s position regarding the Russia-Ukraine conflict, potential for cooperation between the Western Balkans and Japan, Serbia’s European integration and the need for Serbia to resolve the open issues with Pristina through dialogue and by peaceful means. They also talked about investments and projects related to renewable energy sources and Serbia's need for more environmental protection investments.

Stefanovic restated that his position that Serbia must align its foreign policy with the European Union and be ready for the challenging months to come, with their looming energy crisis and possible increase in inflation.
