Education, Science, Technological Development and the Information Society Committee Chairman Meets with Bulgarian Ambassador in Serbia

The Chairman of the Committee on Education, Science, Technological Development and the Information Society Muamer Zukorlic met today at the National Assembly House with the Bulgarian Ambassador in Serbia H.E. Radko Vlaykov to discuss national minority rights in Serbia and the bilateral relations between two countries.

Ambassador Vlaykov said that the two countries enjoy excellent relations, but that there is still room to improve cooperation in the sphere of education especially in view of the sizeable Bulgarian national community in Serbia. The Ambassador is sure that Bulgaria and Serbia will soon be signing a bilateral agreement on education and that the Committee will lend it its full support.

The Chairman of the Committee on Education, Science, Technological Development and the Information Society supports the improvement of relations between Serbia and Bulgaria, as well as the initiative to sign a bilateral agreement on education. Zukorlic added that the Committee has scheduled a sitting for 28 September in the municipality of Bosilegrad to, among other things, discuss the education of national minorities in mixed communities, with a special focus on the rights of the Bulgarian national community in Serbia.

Zukorlic also took the opportunity to brief the guests on how Serbia has addressed the issue of national communities, the operation of national councils as mechanisms for the improvement of their rights in Serbia and the legislative framework regulating the individual and collective rights of national communities. He concluded that the existing mechanisms have yielded good results, but that they still have certain flaws which will be eliminated in time either through amendments of the existing or adoption of new legislation.
