Diaspora and Serbs in the Region Committee Members Talk to Serbs in Romania

On 16 November 2012, the Chairman of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region, Aleksandar Cotric, and Committee member Miodrag Linta attended the celebration of the day of the Serbian Theoretical Grammar School Dositej Obradovic in Timisoara and the opening of the Serbian Book Fair, part of the event Days of Serbian Culture in Timisoara.

The Committee members spoke with the leadership of the Union of Serbs in Romania, representatives of the Grammar School, media operating in Serbian, Serbian Orthodox Church, President of the Assembly of the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region, Dr Slavomir Gvozdenovic, and Serbian Consul General in Timisoara Lazar Manojlovic about issues relating to the improvement of the position of the Serbian community in Romania.

The meetings revolved around the need to amend the Law on Citizenship of the Republic of Serbia to facilitate the acquisition of Serbian citizenship for Serbs in Romania and fellow nationals in other states where they live as autochthonous population. They also pointed out the problem of financing two Serbian language lectors at the department of the University of Timisoara, the return of Makrin Dom to the Serbian Orthodox Church in the town centre, as well as the need to inform the parents and children in Serbia and other countries in the region on the opportunities for education at the Serbian Grammar School in Timisoara.

Committee Chairman Aleksandar Cotric stressed that the National Assembly would do all in its power to come up with satisfactory solutions to these issues as soon as possible, in order to foster trust between the Serbian community in Romania and the mother state and prevent its dwindling.
