Diaspora and Serbs in the Region Committee Members Talk to Delegation of Alliance of Serbian Societies of Slovenia

The members of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region met today, at the National Assembly House, with a delegation of the Alliance of Serbian Societies of Slovenia, headed by the Alliance President, Zlatomir Bodiroza.

The members of the delegation of the Alliance of Serbian Societies of Slovenia, founded in 1994 and gathering 14 Serbian societies, briefed the Committee members on the position and unresolved issues of the Serbian national minority in Slovenia. On the occasion, the Alliance members informed the Committee members about the initiative to unite all the Serbian national associations in Slovenia, a feat for which they need the help of the mother state. In addition, the status of the Serbian community in Slovenia has not been resolved, which is followed by a lack of stable sources of funding, stressed Bodiroza. These problems call for a speedy resolution so that the Serbian national community could gain the status guaranteed to all the other national communities in Slovenia. The issue of media representation of the Serbian community and systemic solutions enabling the learning the mother tongue require just as much attention.
Committee Chairman Aleksandar Cotric endorsed the activities of the Alliance of Serbian Societies of Slovenia, saying it was essential to unify all the associations of the Serbian community in Slovenia. On the occasion he said that the Committee would, within its scope, strive to inform all the key institutions in the Republic of Serbia about these problems of the Serbian community in Slovenia. The Committee would particularly urge to allocate funds for the Serbian community in Slovenia in the Republic of Serbia’s budget for the upcoming year.
The participants agreed that addressing the issues of the Serbian national community in Slovenia should be one of the topics of future talks between Serbian and Slovenian dignitaries.
In addition to the Committee Chairman, Aleksandar Cotric, Committee member Miodrag Linta also took part in the meeting, and the delegation of the Alliance of Serbian Societies of Slovenia, in addition to its President Bodiroza, also comprised Ilija Jankovic, Alliance Vice-President, Dusan Jovanovic, Alliance Secretary and Editor-in-Chief of the Bridges newspaper, as well as Nikola Todorovic, Slovenian delegate at the Assembly of the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region.
