Diaspora and Serbs in the Region Committee Delegation at Conference of National Organizations of Serbs in the Region

To commemorate the centenary of the breakthrough on the Salonika Front and the end of World War One, the Chairman of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region Miodrag Linta and Committee member Aleksandar Markovic, at the invitation of the National Council of Serbs in Macedonia, took part in the Conference of National Organizations of Serbs in the Region, held 14-17 September 2018, in Bitola, Macedonia, and the celebration of the centenary of the breakthrough on the Salonika Front.

The conference was attended by representatives of Serbian associations and organizations from eight countries in the region (Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hungary, Romania and Albania), as well as representatives of associations from Serbia. They exchanged views on the position of Serbs in the region and discussed possible measures and activities to help preserve the national and cultural identity of Serbs in the region. The attending were, among others, addressed by the Chairman of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region Miodrag Linta.

On 15 September, the delegation of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region laid a wreath at the Serbian Military Cemetery in Bitola. Having laid the wreath, Committee Chairman Miodrag Linta addressed the gathering stressing that: “The breakthrough on the Salonika Front in World War One, the centenary of which we have gathered here to mark, is a date written in gold in the history not only of the Serbian people but of all the other freedom-loving nations who consider peaceful cohabitation with their neighbours the holiest of holies and a lasting priority. There is good reason we are proud today of our ancestors’ contribution to this and other wars fought here for the freedom of the motherland and all of Europe. It is our moral duty to keep a living memory of them. 14 September a hundred years ago saw the beginning of the decisive battle to break through the Salonika Front resulting in the breakdown of the Central Powers in the Great War. The price Serbia paid was too high. 1.3 million people died, one third of the population and 60% of the men in it. The victory in the Great War and in other wars fought here has left a lasting marks on the coming generations and obliges us to never let those horrors repeat. Today, the countries of the Balkan region need to strengthen cooperation and ties in all mutually beneficial matters and respect the fundamental values of the modern world – peace, freedom, human rights, minority rights and anti-fascism.”

On the second day of the Conference the attending visited Kaymakchalan. The delegation of the Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region laid a wreath for the Serbian soldiers at the memorial chapel of St. Peter and Paul on Kaymakchalan. Committee Chairman Miodrag Linta said that: “The Battle of Kaymakchalan is historically very important because by liberating Bitola after long and horrible battles, after just a year of occupation the Serbian Army restored a part of its territory”. The visit to Kaymakchalan was organized to mark the 102nd anniversary of the one of the most important battles in the history of Serbia and the Serbian Army, 30 August – 23 September 1916, which claimed the lives of 4,438 Serbs.
