Diaspora and Serbs in the Region Committee Chairman’s Statement on Judgement of International Court of Justice in The Hague

Having heard the judgement of the International Court of Justice in The Hague today, we believe the time has come to truly begin resolving the myriad of open issues relating to Serbian refugees and exiles from Croatia, first and foremost their return, the return of the confiscated property, apartments, pensions and many other status and minority rights, use of language and script.

I expect Croatia to soon approach the resolution of these issues seriously, because there is no more reason to delay, especially considering that the judgement eliminates the formal obstacle to return to the Serbs the rights they were stripped of, their rights that were usurped.

I expect the judgement to contribute to the development of better relations between the two countries. Of course, the fact that there have been victims in the war conflicts is not in dispute, and that all war crimes should be investigated as a moral judiciary satisfaction, in which we must insist on an individual responsibility and not accuse an entire people. This will put an end to the conflict and make sure no such thing ever happens again.

The Committee on the Diaspora and Serbs in the Region will in the near future focus on Serbian refugees and exiles from the territory of the Republic of Croatia.
