Central European Initiative Countries Strongly Support Accelerated Integration of Western Balkans into European Union

National Assembly Deputy Speaker and Foreign Affairs Committee Chairman Borko Stefanovic took part in the meeting of foreign affairs committee chairpersons and heads of delegations to the Central European Initiative Parliamentary Dimension, in Trieste, Italy, on 13 October 2023.

The conference was opened by Stefania Craxi, Chairperson of the Italian Senate’s Foreign Affairs and Defence Committee, Giulio Tremonti, Chairman of the Italian Chamber of Deputies Foreign and European Affairs Committee, and Roberto Antonione, Central European Initiative Secretary General. In the course of the debate, all the delegations called on the CEI and the European Union member governments participating in this initiative to take a clear position and provide strong support for the Western Balkans' joining the European Union as soon as possible.

In his address, Borko Stefanovic emphasised that "it is important that the Western Balkans become part of the European Union as soon as possible and that the Union must find a way to make this possible." He stressed that "preparation for full membership can be achieved by 2030 and that date is a realistic and achievable goal, both for the candidates and for the Union." Speaking Kosovo-Metohija, he pointed to the "enormous pressure of Pristina and Albin Kurti on the Serbs" and that "it is necessary to find concrete solutions through the dialogue between Belgrade and Pristina in order to resolve the existing problems, and the discussion about the status cannot contribute to anything, because Belgrade cannot recognise the independence of Kosovo-Metohija. Serbia must align its foreign policy with the European Union and all possible restrictive measures of the Union due to the events in Banjska must not be aimed at the citizens of Serbia, but exclusively at those responsible and those who organised them."

In the course of the session, the delegation had bilateral meetings with the delegations of Italy, Poland, Ukraine, Slovenia, Romania, Montenegro and Bosnia and Herzegovina. The officials discussed the improvement of bilateral and parliamentary cooperation, perspectives of EU expansion to the Western Balkans and the current situation in Europe and the world.
