Bundestag Will Not Stand in Serbia’s Way toward Euro-Integration

The German Parliamentary delegation to the Inter-Parliamentary Union stressed that Germany would not stand in Serbia’s way to integration into the European Union if the European Commission’s report of 14 April is positive and, based on it, the country’s Foreign Ministry takes the appropriate position. This was said at the two delegations’ bilateral meeting in Ecuador, at the margins of the 128th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly, held on Sunday, 24 March 2013.

According to the German MPs, Serbia needs to complete the negotiation process with Pristina, mediated by Catherine Ashton, so that the current Bundestag legislature could make the appropriate decision by the end of its mandate. There are certain unavoidable requirements and expectations in reaching an agreement with Pristina. Some MPs’ reservations notwithstanding, the Bundestag’s majority position is that Serbia should be supported in taking the next step in the Euro-integration process – receiving a start date for the talks.
On the same day, the Serbian parliamentary delegation also met with the Dutch delegation. In a comprehensive and open dialogue, the Serbian delegation asked for the Dutch side’s support for the continuation of the integration process and agreed to intensify parliamentary cooperation in the future. The Dutch side commended the progress made in the negotiations, but also pointed out that they expect adequate results. The enlargement process is not blocked and Serbia is welcome to join the European Union. The Dutch side also commended Serbia’s engagement at the Inter-Parliamentary Union and congratulated it on the post in the Bureau of the Second Standing Committee.
