Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Committee Members Talk to DR Congo Parliamentary Delegation

The Deputy Chairman of the Agriculture, Forestry and Water Management Committee, Oto Kismarton, and Committee members Sasa Maksimovic and Ljuban Panic, met today at the National Assembly House, with a parliamentary delegation of the Democratic Republic of Congo, headed by Ezadri Eguma Norbert, DR Congo Parliamentary rapporteur.

In the meeting, the officials opined that Serbia and the Congo enjoy good friendly relations and share a common goal – to further develop the two countries’ cooperation. The visit, according to the head of the Congolese delegation, is the first step toward strengthening the relationship between the two parliaments. Speaking of the two countries relations, he restated the Congo’s principled position, that it would not recognise the independence of Kosovo-Metohija.

The meeting mainly focused on expanding the agricultural cooperation between Serbia and the Congo. The officials agreed that agriculture presents a special potential for the improvement of overall cooperation. The head of the Congolese parliamentary delegation stressed that Congo’s national strategy is to boost agriculture, which is a priority sphere and focus of attention. The Congo covers a vast area of some 2,345 square kilometers which provides a significant potential for establishing long-term cooperation between the two countries in the sphere. Ezadri Eguma Norbert informed the hosts that, out of the 11 Congolese provinces, two have been set aside for the promotion of agricultural cooperation and the fact that Serbia was chosen was not accidental, since, as he said, the Congo needs Serbia’s knowledge and expertise. He announced a visit by the Minister of Agriculture and Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture to Serbia.

Oto Kismarton briefed the guests on Serbia’s agricultural potentials stressing that the goal is to make agriculture the leading economic branch in Serbia. Speaking of what Serbia can offer the Congo as regards boosting its agriculture, he outlined various types of cooperation such as education and training of labour staff in Serbia, assistance by Serbian experts, transfer of technology and cooperation with scientific institutes and faculties in Serbia.
